Vietnam has a population of more than 90 million people, comprised of 54 different ethnic groups that possess historically rich cultural backgrounds and interesting folk arts. The country has more than 1,000 historical, cultural, and architectural sites which have been officially classified as "Heritage Sites". Five of these sites have been recognized as world cultural heritage sites by UNESCO (United Nations Educational and Scientific Cultural Organization), including Halong Bay, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National park , the ancient capital of Hue, the ancient town Hoi An, and My Son Holy Land. It will become clear from excursions to these sites of Vietnam which is a country with a long-established history.

An Quang Pagoda

This pagoda gained some notoriety during the American War as the home of Thich Tri Quang, a powerful monk who led protests against the South Vietnamese government in 1963 and 1966. When the war ended he was held under house arrest and later placed in solitary confinement for 16 months until his eventual release.

Temple of King Hung Vuong

Directly opposite the History Museum, this elaborate, high-ceilinged temple honours the first of the legendary Hung kings. They’re said to have been the first rulers of the Vietnamese nation, having established their rule in the Red River region before it was invaded by the Chinese.

Notre Dame Cathedral

Built between 1877 and 1883, Notre Dame Cathedral is set in the heart of HCMC’s government quarter. The cathedral faces Dong Khoi Street. It is neo-Romanesque with two 40m-high square towers tipped with iron spires, which dominate the square here.

Military Museum

Just a short distance from the history museum, this small collection is devoted to Ho Chi Minh’s campaign to liberate the south. The exhibits inside are of minor interest but some US, Chinese and Soviet war material is on display outdoors, including a South Vietnamese Air Force Cessna A-37 and a US-built F-5E Tiger with the 20mm nose gun still loaded.
